Course Overview
New Visions Life Sciences is a unique, fun and challenging opportunity for students to explore their interest in life processes and the world around them from a biological and social perspective. In cooperation with Cornell University and local business and industry, students explore their individual academic interests, be it from veterinary medicine to environmental engineering or anything in between. The integrated approach to teaching allows students to fulfill senior year requirements of English, Government & Economics within the context of life sciences.
|
Each student works with the instructor to design an experience that would include his or her career interests, such as applied scientific research, landscape architecture, animal behavior or environmental engineering, just to name a few. All Life Sciences students complete a major project in collaboration with Cornell University faculty and staff—some will have an opportunity to have their work published and presented at venues such as a research symposium or various science fairs.
The program is also rich in leadership development and service learning opportunities, as all students learn the art of public speaking and personal communication. |

Maureen Zorn
Life Sciences / Applied Scientific Research Teacher Maureen Zorn grew up in Interlaken, NY and attended South Seneca High School. She was a student in New Visions herself, and graduated in 2000. She then attended Cornell University and earned a B.S. in Animal Science. Early in her career she worked in the dairy industry for Cornell Cooperative Extension and Genex. Then she ran her own dog boarding and grooming business for several years. In 2013, Maureen and her family moved to Owego, NY to pursue their passion for Agriculture and farming on their family crop farm. Maureen then decided to pursue a career in Agricultural Education and earned her M.A.T. in Agriculture from Cornell and Ithaca College. She taught Agriculture for 3 years at Tioga Central, where she built a new Ag program and FFA Chapter. In her spare time, she enjoys camping, riding horses, being outdoors and reading. When the New Visions job opened up, Maureen knew it was her dream job and an opportunity to get back to her roots. She’s looking forward to helping students have unique experiences in the New Visions Life Science Program. |
A Few Past Student Experiences
Isabelle came to New Visions with a desire to become a veterinarian. She shadowed veterinarians throughout
the services at Cornell University’s Companion and Farm Animal Hospitals (surgery, oncology, emergency, ambulatory, and more). In addition, she worked on a research project to understand mastitis in dairy cattle. Isabelle is a student at Cornell University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. |
Cassandra worked as an intern in Dr. Maria Harrison’s Lab at the Boyce Thompson Research Institute. She developed skills in microbiology by studying arbuscular mycorrhizal, a fungi that forms a symbiotic relationship with the roots of sorghum, allowing the plant to access previously unattainable nutrients. While in New Visions, she participated in the New York Youth Institute and earned a trip to the Global Youth Institute, a program of the World Food Prize Foundation. Her experience in Iowa led her to spend a summer in the Philippines working at the International Rice Research Institute. Cassandra is now at Cornell University as a plant sciences major and a paid intern at BTI.

Spencer wanted to work outdoors and enjoyed both science and nature. He interned with the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology under the tutelage of Dr. Kevin McGowan. Spencer explored behavioral ecology of crows and is now at Syracuse College of Environmental Science and Forestry |
