Course Overview
New Visions Health & Medical Sciences is an academically
rigorous professional studies program for college-bound
high school seniors who are interested in careers such as
medicine (including physician and physician assistant), nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, medical technology, physical therapy, nutrition/dietetics, and medical research.

Clinical experience is the core of the program.
Students are immersed in the medical field through a
combination of classroom learning and clinical rotations
(internships) in departments at Cayuga Medical Center
and medical practices and health agencies in the
community. Through daily involvement with medical
staff, students learn what is required of health care
professionals and understand how their education
correlates to real-life situations on the job. Students get
first-hand experience with the professional demands
of a busy medical environment and see how working
together as a team can provide quality patient care.
What does NV look like?
New Visions students assist with patient care, learn about
laboratory and diagnostic procedures, and work alongside
medical and support professionals in virtually every health
and medical specialty during the course of the year.

New Visions students usually take one or two morning
classes at their high schools. Then, they head to Cayuga
Medical Center for New Visions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
When their work at the hospital is complete, most
students return to their high schools for academics,
athletics, and other extracurricular activities.

Testimonials

Angela Chang
MD at Cayuga Health Convenient Care

"As a physician working in the urgent care it has been a joy having the New Visions students rotate through with us. They all have their own personal reasons for choosing the medical field. Whether they know exactly what they want to pursue or are still deciding, it has been a gratifying experience for me to see their enthusiasm and genuine interest in the field. In the urgent care they have the opportunity to observe a patient's encounter from start to finish. From triage and vital signs with one of our registered nurses, evaluation by a provider to discussing the medical decision making and discharge of the patient. Experiences range from simple coughs and colds, laceration repairs and fracture management to more serious conditions such as asthma attacks, allergic reactions and arrhythmias - just to name a few. New Visions aims to nurture and develop the student’s natural interest and aptitude for the health sciences. It is a wonderful program and I am honored to be involved."

"I applied to New Visions looking for confirmation of my potential major in college, but I was granted with much more than that. I was able to experience an average day in about 40 different fields of medicine in which I realized the extent of diversity in the medical field. I was exposed to facets of medicine that I had never considered before, and my eyes were opened to many new exciting paths that I could one day follow. I was additionally able to become close friends with people who shared my goals. This was inspiring because I was surrounded by constant encouragement to work hard and continue to further my knowledge, and eventually prompted me to make my ultimate goal attending medical school."

“Helping a mother to deliver a baby was a lifechanging
experience for me. I even got to cut the umbilical cord and help measure and weigh the baby!”
“The hectic pace of the E.R. really appealed to me. I learned that I really enjoy the variety of cases you see in the E.R.”
“I entered New Visions wanting to be a pediatrician, but my Laboratory rotation reawakened my love for
chemistry. The wide variety of clinical settings helps you zero in on the best career path for you.”
“While in the ICU, I spent time with a patient who was on life support and did not survive. Although it was very sad, I learned a lot. Seeing the
professionalism and compassion of the medical staff showed me how to handle challenging situations like that.”
“I absolutely loved my Rehabilitation rotation. It was great to see how the patients improved each day I was there.”
“New Visions made me a much stronger college applicant. I discussed my clinical experiences in my essay and interviews, and I know that made me stand out.”
